Journey to Tessellation: Austin Wilson’s Life-Long Passion of Data and Intelligence
Growing up, I’ve always had a passion for data and intelligence. As a boy, I was constantly trying to figure out the natural world around me, asking big questions that seemed to stump my parents. After discovering big data and its applications, these big questions seemed to be solvable with just a few clicks of the mouse.
As a Pacific Northwest native, I have always had an affinity for the outdoors. I wasn’t always certain what I wanted to do, but I knew that the snow-covered mountains and pristine lakes would be involved. I decided to attend the beautiful Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, which was conveniently located right next to Mt. Baker. When I wasn’t instructing snowboarding, I was in the computer lab learning about Information Systems and International Business.
It was in MIS 320 that I instantly knew data visualization was going to be my future. I can remember my professor opening Tableau and showing us a dashboard with metrics from our class such as eye color, hair color, and height. It was amazing to me how impactful a simple dashboard with an effective story could be. I was hooked. I made dashboards from how to maximize my bartending tips depending on the day of the week and restaurant section to creating content to help with fantasy football drafts.
I decided to return to WWU to earn an MBA in Enterprise Management… and to continue snowboarding. This taught me to be a more rounded business professional and ultimately gave me an excellent toolkit to enter the consulting world. Upon graduating, I earned a position with a company named Decisive Data doing exactly what I envisioned: visualizing data with Tableau. I was able to work on projects with big names like Amazon and T-Mobile as well as smaller organizations such as startups and school districts. After working with amazing people and gaining experience with Tableau Prep, PowerBI, Alteryx, and more, I decided to move into a position that fosters training and coaching. Queue Tessellation.
I couldn’t be more excited to join the Tessellation crew to become an even more rounded consultant. In addition to consulting experience, their Data Coach program aligns with my own drive for introducing and educating those to my own personal passions. I can’t wait to show the world the importance of data visualization with Tessellation!
When I’m not building dashboards, I’m playing instruments, exploring the outdoors, or working on my car and RV. Because I live in my RV, I have become a digital nomad building dashboards wherever I happen to be parked at the time. It’s enabled me to e-meet people around the world, continue working with my passion for data visualization, and pursue my hobbies like snowboarding and camping.
