Taking Apart Toys to Tessellation: Taguma Nicholas’ Journey to Analytics Consulting

Curiosity Turned to Passion

The most distinguishing attribute I inherited from my Father is a sense of curiosity, his interest in Computer Programs and Design, and mine in whatever I could get my hands on. One of my earliest childhood memories was taking apart my toys, and much to my mother’s chagrin, the television remote and any other low-lying device within reach. This curiosity extended into understanding how each part contributed to the overall performance and efficiency. Growing up, I would challenge myself to see if I could reassemble and maintain functionality with fewer parts – a philosophy I have carried throughout my adult life.

Years later, while on the path to a lifelong career in People Management, I came to the realization that mediating disputes over who moved Mr. Szalinski’s orange juice in the company fridge wasn’t how I wanted to spend the rest of my days. Recalling my passion for systems and efficiency, I sought an opportunity to learn SQL and gain experience as a Data Analyst. After years of working shoulder-to-shoulder with my IT counterparts and applying the concepts attained during my tutelage, I secured a role in the Aerospace industry as a Data Engineer.

Starting a Career in Data Analytics

With a career in Analytics in mind, I pursued a graduate degree in Data Science and Analytics, which continues to play a significant role in my ability to translate cognition into practical application. As such, the rigorous curriculum allowed me to expand on the fundamental elements of formal technical training.

As the adage goes, “Best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” When the pandemic hit, I conceived my daughter and planned to be a stay-at-home parent. I knew I wanted to return to the field eventually, and while trying to keep connected, I saw an advertisement for an Analytics Consultant with Tessellation and knew I had to jump on it. I applied, delivered my daughter, and interviewed the day after I returned from the hospital.

When you consider my eye for pattern matching and my desire to do more with less, it is only fitting that the dots connected me to data storytelling. I love how Data Analytics and Visualization distill information to the most granular level, just like I did with the remote control. My career at Tessellation scratches that itch of wanting to understand how things work and make them work better. A colleague once said, “I want to work WITH the best and BE the best.” That’s what I’ve found at Tessellation.
